Thanks for reading the July issue of UPEACE/Geneva eNews. This newsletter is aimed at providing updates and news from UPEACE and its regional programmes with special focus on the Africa and Central Asia programmes, which are coordinated through the Geneva office. In addition it will provide information on UPEACE publications and new developments, new documents available on the Africa programme, and Workshops/Seminars / Conferences being offered through the Africa and Central Asia programmes.

Congratulations Class 2003!

The Africa Programme team congratulates all the students of class 2003 for their excellent achievement and wishes them every success in their future endeavours.

Students from fifteen countries received their Master's degree during the ceremony on Monday, 23 June, 2003 at the University's campus and headquarter in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Three students from Malawi, Nigeria, and Rwanda were among the graduates. Rector Martin Lees presented the Rector's Award of Excellence to Martin Zibau Nkuna, from Malawi, who received the Master of Arts in Human Rights Studies. NORAD's contribution to the organization of three Curriculum Development Workshops in Africa

The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) has confirmed their support to the Africa Programme and contributed to the organization of three Curriculum Development Workshops which will be held in the following regions over the coming months:

  • October 2003 - Southern African Region. To be held in Durban, South Africa, coordinated by the University of Natal. The focus will be the study and teaching of non-violent transformation of conflict.
  • December 2003 - Central and Eastern African Region. To be held in Kampala, Uganda, coordinated by Makerere University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology. The focus will be on how to teach the connections between justice, human rights and peace.
  • February 2004 - Western African Region. To be held in Jos, Nigeria, coordinated by the National Universities Commission and the University of Jos. The focus will be on the insertion of peace-related curricula into the general studies undergraduate programme of Nigerian universities, whilst also providing a model which can be adapted to other countries in the sub-region.

"Media in Conflict Prevention and Peace-building" course to be developed in Spanish

UPEACE's Institute for Media, Peace and Security (IMPS), is commissioning the Colombia-based Medios para la Paz, a leading Latin American media training organization, to develop a Spanish-language course called the Media in Conflict Prevention and Peace-building. This course will be offered in early 2004 in two versions:

a) a three-week professional training version;
b) a media-related component of UPEACE's basic academic course in Peace Studies.

IMPS holds Oxford Media Conference

UPEACE's Institute for Media, Peace and Security (IMPS), in partnership with La Maison Française d'Oxford, will hold a day-and-a-half conference at Oxford University from Oct. 31 - Nov. 1, 2003 on the topic of ''International Media Coverage of the 2003 Iraq War.'' With financial support from the French Government and a UK foundation to be announced, the meeting will bring together leading journalists and media experts from Britain, France and the United States. Call for papers: Journal of Peacebuilding and Development

The Journal of Peacebuilding and Development (JPD), a formal partner of the UPEACE Africa Programme, is a new tri-annual refereed journal providing a forum for the sharing of critical thinking and constructive action on issues at the intersections of conflict, development, and peace.

JDP is calling for papers for its next issue which will endeavour to capture and examine critical peacebuilding and development topics and questions that challenge our era in the African context, such as: Development policies, processes and outcomes: implications for conflict and peace; Social and economic policy: conflicts and possible resolutions; Identities and relationships in conflict and development; People-centred development in divided societies, and many others.

Articles submitted to the Journal should be original contributions. Abstract deadline: August 1, 2003 (the earlier the better, given September 1 full article due date). For full details please click here or contact jpd@africaonline.co.zw.
