New Master's Degree in International Peace Studies

The core programme at UPEACE, the Master's degree in International Peace Studies will be initiated in September 2003. It requires three terms, through August 2004. The Master's Programme in International Peace Studies is designed to broaden the base of knowledge of the students so that they will achieve a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the major issues in the field of peace and conflict studies. It will challenge the students increasingly to undertake their own research and to develop their own capacities for critical analysis of complex issues. It will also provide the students with a global perspective and the ethical foundations to confront the emerging issues affecting peace and security in coming years.

The Programme is intensive. It will be accomplished in three terms: from September to December 2003; from January to May 2004; and from June to August 2004. The Programme includes a number of compulsory courses, a major specialisation and an elective, for a total of 46 credits.

To provide students with a degree of flexibility, specialisations are offered on two major issues affecting peace and security: Economic Development and Peace or Environmental Security. Each student, on applying for the Master's Programme, must specify which of these two specialisations he/she wishes to follow.

Application deadline for class 2003-2004 is May 30, 2003. The complete course description, admission requirements, and online application are available on the UPEACE web site or you may contact the university directly at the following address:

Master's Degree in Gender and Peace Building

The Master of Arts in Gender and Peace Building is a three-semester programme that has been designed to support women and men who participate in social, economic and political processes of change and who are interested in key issues of gender and peace building. In addition, the degree responds to the demands and challenges faced by students continuing their education and by mid-career professionals working in government, multi-lateral or bi-lateral institutions, non-governmental organizations and private enterprises. Overall, the programme aims to involve men and women in the processes of peace with the clear understanding that conflict, violence and war have a variety of impacts upon men and women that, while comparable, are not the same.

Objectives of the programme

  1. To offer a graduate programme in the field of Gender and Peace Building to students while continuing their education and professional work in government, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
  2. To prepare qualified professionals who are able to design proposals, carry out development programmes, and evaluate projects from the gender perspective.
  3. To prepare people who are highly qualified to actively participate in the prevention, negotiation and post-conflict processes.

The Master's Degree is presented in English, and all reading and writing materials are given in English.
Application deadline for class 2003-2004 is May 30, 2003. The complete course description, admission requirements, and online application are available on the UPEACE web site or you may contact the university directly at the following address:
