Distance Learning Course on the Role of the Media in the Rwanda Genocide.

In this distance learning course you will study the different facets of the media role in the genocide in detail. You will see how easily the concept of free speech and free press in a local situation can be perverted for foul ends. We will ask how this dilemma could be resolved. We will explore the problem of inadequate or even distorted international coverage of crises and conflicts in areas poorly understood by Western journalists. We will consider whether this unfortunate situation can be improved in the future.

The Faculty and Staff Development Seminar on Gender and Peacebuilding, held in Kitwe, Zambia from the 26th to 30th of July 2004, was jointly organized by the UPEACE Africa Programme and the Department of Gender and Peace Studies, in collaboration with the Dag Hammarskjöld Centre for Peace, Good Governance, and Human Rights of the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation (MEF).
UPEACE/Africa programme hosts two meetings in Butare, Rwanda to discuss new initiatives in the Great Lakes Region.

"News for Peace"initiative in Rwanda (28 - 29 June 2004. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the development of a new project initiative entitled "News for Peace", and to agree on its strategy and implementation plan.
Regional Media for Peace Programme in the Great Lakes Region (30 June - 1 July 2004). During the second meeting participants discussed the setting up, on a short, medium and long-term period, of a regional "Media for Peace" programme in the Great Lakes Region.

A UPEACE Africa Programme delegation undertook a planning mission to Zambia on 16 March 2004 and held a two day coordination meeting in preparation of a forthcoming Faculty and Staff Development Seminar on Gender and Peacebuilding . The delegation met with representatives of the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation (MEF) and the Dag Hammarskjöld Peace Centre for Peace, Good Governance and Human Rights in Kitwe, Zambia , partners of the Africa Programme .

The director will be based in the Addis Ababa office of UPEACE (once launched in 2004), and will be part of a unique university that functions as a global knowledge network, created by a General Assembly resolution of the United Nations two decades ago.
